Spinal Cord Injury on Carnival Cruise Vacation
April 20, 2012
Visited Freeport, Bahamas
Ken Fougère
On April 20, Ken Fougère of Everett, MA, was severely injured from a diving accident while on a cruise vacation with family & friends to the Bahamas. Ken sustained multiple neck fractures and a compressed spinal cord injury. He was medi-vaced to the Del Ray Trauma Center in Florida where he had surgery for 7 hours to repair his injuries. After 3 weeks of treatment & care there, he was flown to Boston's Spaulding Rehab Hospital where he spent 7 weeks for physical and occupational therapy. He's home now where he slowly continues his recovery.
My injury has not defined me, destroyed me, deterred me, or defeated me because only in the midst of challenging moments do you find your inner strength.
Well. it's been a year since injuring my spinal cord, breaking my neck in 3 places.
I never thought something as horrific and life changing could happen to me. With the help of so many people and working hard at physical therapy, I feel like I've recovered maybe 80% of my physical abilities.
I want to thank God. Also the countless number of people for their help and encouragement. I want to especially thank, (Vickie) Victoria Franciscus, a surgical nurse at the Delray Medical Center in Florida without whose help, I never would of made it. I'll always love her and be in her debt.
Most of all I want to thank my wife Joyce. She's been there helping me every day, pulling me up when I'm depressed and making sure I had whatever I needed. I don't know what I would have done without her love and devotion during this most difficult year. Thank you Joyce. You're my rock. I love you. — feeling blessed
