A Male Red-Winged Blackbird

These birds with a very distinctive call live all year around in Vancouver close to mashes, wetlands, lakes and ponds. The size and intensity of red in their patch is directly related to how successful the male is in attrracting a female (quoting my birdbook). The female of the species is not black but heavily striped brown with a marked buff streak over the eye.

There was a large number of Blackbirds attracted to the feeder in the Fraser River marshland - they were able to reach the food through the squirrel-safe metal guard.
