D.C. After Dark No.1 - The Streetcar
Traction enthusiasts might consider the title a "double entendre" as the
D.C. Streetcar does happen to operate on 750 volts D.C. from the overhead catenary...
But the title also introduces a new series of photographs taken in Washington, D.C. after sunset.
The D.C. Streetcar is a free service running along the newly revitalized H Street Northeast Corridor
of Washington, from Union Station to the intersection of Oklahoma Avenue.and Benning Road.
The Union Station stop is on the H St overpass high above the railroad tracks leading into the station,
as well as those of the Red Line of Washington's MetroRail rapid transit system, which is why the streetcar
is seen climbing from the beginning of the busy H Street commercial strip. The steepness of the ramp is
somewhat exaggerated in the tele-compression used in this photo, taken on a recent winter evening.
