One of our last great Rhino's

One of the last ... almost poached to extinction!! We were fortunate enough to enjoy the company of this wonderful peaceful Rhino at a waterhole late at night. I used my camera on a tripod and actually managed a long exposure without the rhino creating any movement. The stripes along his body are reflections of the ripples of the water as he is drinking from the pool.

I just had a message from someone in this fotocommunity who is VERY concerned that I am endangering this rhino by posting the image my response to this is as follows:

"I have not left any Geo-tagging on the photograph it is also cropped in such a way so that you cannot identify where the photograph is taken, the place is not recognisable. This particular Rhino was photographed almost a year before I posted the photograph, so unfortunately in reality it has already probably been killed by a poacher or may even have moved many 100's of kms away from this area.

Every game reserve uses Rhino as part of their marketing campaign and advertising, many overseas tourists to Africa wouldn't even visit a game reserve if there were no "big 5 game" to be seen.

The poachers know exactly where all the Rhino are, thousands of potential poachers travel as "tourists" through Africa every day to find the rhino's so that they can pass on the information to the poachers.

I am very conscious about endangered species and responsible about my images, but I do not believe for one moment my photograph will in any way provide a location to a poacher and thus endanger the life of this rhino."
