The old lady who I saw while I was walking on the streets of Balat, which is a historical district of Istanbul. At first she was a little shy to pose for me and it took a while to persuade her. Before the pandemic of course.

  Hi Alexander. It is nice to hear from you again and so pleased to learn that you liked it. As I stated under the photo, it was taken in Balat, one of the oldest districts of Istanbul. “Balat” comes from the Greek word “palation” which means palace, you surely know better than me. The Patriarchate is located in this district, too. So, it is possible that this is an originaly old Greek house. However, Jews who had been exiled from Spain and migrated to the Ottoman territory were settled in this district. And most of houses having such architectural features, as I know, are the examples that remain from that Jewish community. Greetings from Turkey.
