Hokkaido

Hokkaido is the northernmost of Japan’s islands and although it accounts for one-fifth of Japan’s land area, only 5% of the Japanese population lives there. The real beauty of the place lies in the unpopulated, wilderness regions – where in contrast to Honshu – there are no cultural monuments, but superb opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, skiing, sampling of hot springs and observing wildlife.
