800 Year old golden images
Highly revered temple housing five golden images of the Buddha.
So much gold leaf has been applied to the images, that they have become unrecognizable as Buddha images and look like a solid mass of gold. Every day Buddhist devotees come to the monastery to pay their respect to the images and apply more gold leaf, which only men are allowed to do.
These five round structures are 12th century Buddha images and a sanctuary throughout Burma. The figures are originally from Malaysia. The sacred area is reserved for men only. For reasons that are incomprehensible to us, women must not approach the figures. Their shape is barely recognizable, as they have been covered with tens of thousands of layers of gold leaf over time.
