Architectural blend
Greece
Thrace region
town of Xanthi
part of the old town quarter
In many towns of Greece there are still houses in reasonably good condition, having resisted to time, wars and disasters, indicative of a certain mixted architectural style, influenced by elements of foreign occupation. Among the most interesting and well preserved are those of Ottoman origin as they reflect an evident blend of decoration and daily life practicality very much adjustable to limitations imposed by religion, tradition and ethics. These distinct architectural traces exist mainly in North Greece Macedonia and Thrace regions maybe because this part of Greece was particularly "cosmopolitan" and fully involved in ,as much local as foreign merchant and naval trade.
In the photo is presented part of the old town quarter of Xanthi, in Thrace region, a particularly thriving town in the Ottoman times due to the vicinity with Turkey.
Note the soiled walls with posters and inscriptions as it was a...preelection period!
