Black-crowned night heron

This medium-sized heron species occurs in a broad range of fresh-, brackish- and salt-water habitats.
In Belgium however, it's very rare.

It's a solitary bird that usually hunts in the dark, but I was lucky enough to spot one in the early morning hours.

Like any heron, it waits motionless for its prey in or along the water.

Dutch name : Kwak
German name : Nachtreiher
Latin name : Nycticorax nycticorax
