Bungle Bungle

They stand 200 to 300 m above the plains, with steep cliffs guarding the western face. The sandstone and conglomerates have been eroded into these shapes over 20 million years.
Layers of rock either coated by algal growth or stained by minerals create the regular horizontal bands of orange and black or grey that give the domes thier distinctive appearance and add to their intrigue.
Remarkably, this range appears to have been known only to Aboriginal people and a handful of local pastoralists and sientists until the 1980s.
