The smallest resident duck. A dainty and easily overlooked bird of open lakes. It occurs throughout the low country. Breeding male has glossy blackish-green back and collar, a broad white band across the wing in flight, and grey and white under parts. Female has dull-black back, drab underparts and a dark eye-line.
