Industry in Aserbaijan focuses on the extraction of petroleum and natural gas from vast deposits located on the Caspian Sea coast near the country’s capital, Baku. Oil has been mined in this region since the 8th century. Modern technology now facilitates the mining operation; computerized and automated drilling stations like this offshore platform are capable of drilling into seabeds up to 200 m (660 ft) below the water’s surface.
