Such a great person, but in the picture he looks so small. This again shows his humility, I think. Very interesting shot. Shortly before he died I saw him at my University in Berlin, taking a speech for the new students. A very impressing experience, he is a fantastic man.

The shot was taken on 22.12.2003 during a shooting for a campaign for the restaurant "Quarreé" at Hotel Adlon in Berlin.

The photographer on the set was Nela König, I was working as creative director for an advertising agency back then. That job had to be done on very short notice, because we received the call with his approval
on that very morning, so we had to come up with a photographer and all the prep work within a few hours.

He was aware of the fact that I was taking pictures, because I asked him if it was ok to do some documentary shots.
The whole thing was more or less a favour he did for Hotel Adlon's (ex)manager J.K. van Dahlen.

A very kind, funny, and intelligent man. I was lucky to work with him, because he passed away shortly afterwards in March 2004

If you are interested in nela's images that were actually used in the campaign, check out her site:

They are the first images of gallery 2.

I would like to know more about how the image was made. Did he know you were taking the shot. He is holding his knife and fork like he is ready to stab someone and he has a most wary look on his face.
I ask because I see the image is unreleased.
    Interesting. Patrick
