Während wir den Vildmarksvägen entlangfuhr, entdeckte ich etwas Weißes hoch oben in einem Baum. Also hielten wir an (wo kann man noch mitten auf der Straße anhalten, ohne den Verkehr aufzuhalten?), ich machte zur Sicherheit ein paar Fotos durch das Fenster und stieg dann aus. Glücklicherweise blieb der Vogel dort, da die Fensteraufnahmen eine Katastrophe waren. Er sah aus wie eine Eule, aber ich war mir nicht sicher. Nach der Untersuchung der Fotos stellte sich heraus, dass es sich um einen Sperbereulen handelte. Dies ist eine Eule, die tagsüber jagt, und „ihre akrobatischen Fähigkeiten machen sie zu einem unvergesslichen Anblick“ [PictureThis]. Wie Wikipedia anmerkt: „Sperbereulen sind im gesamten borealen Wald ungleichmäßig verteilt und sehr variabel.“ Sie fügen hinzu: „[Es] ist eine mittelgroße echte Eule der nördlichen Breiten. Sie ist kein Wandervogel und bleibt normalerweise in ihrem Brutgebiet, obwohl sie manchmal nach Süden ausbricht. Sie ist eine der wenigen Eulen, die weder nacht- noch dämmerungsaktiv ist und nur tagsüber aktiv ist. Dies ist die einzige lebende Art der Gattung Surnia der Familie Strigidae, der „typischen“ Eulen (im Gegensatz zu Schleiereulen, Tytonidae).“

While driving the Vildmarksvägen I spotted something white high up in a tree. So we stopped (where can you still stop in the middle of the road without holding up traffic?), I took a few photos through the window just to be sure and then got out. Fortunately the bird stayed put since the window shots turned out to be a disaster. It looked like an owl but I wasn't sure. After examining the photos it turned out to be a northern hawk owl. This is an owl that hunts during the day and "its acrobatic abilities make it a sight to behold" [PictureThis]. As Wikipedia notes: "Northern hawk-owls are unevenly distributed and highly variable throughout the boreal forest." They add: "[It] is a medium-sized true owl of the northern latitudes. It is non-migratory and usually stays within its breeding range, though it sometimes irrupts southward. It is one of the few owls that is neither nocturnal nor crepuscular, being active only during the day. This is the only living species in the genus Surnia of the family Strigidae, the "typical" owls (as opposed to barn owls, Tytonidae)."
