Il cimitero delle Fontanelle di Napoli è un posto veramente singolare e la tua foto interpreta molto bene questo aspetto.

..this reminds me on the "Dia de los Muertos" in Mexico...skulls everywhere..anyway: this is a very strong photograph with a well-known, but mostly surpressed message: death walks with us, all our life and nobody leaves this world alive...the cross stands for hope, for eternity and for another life beyond this one, if we believe in that. Your picture shows the cross in the light - but it's the cobwebs, the are really shine...a little depressing if we think this over. But there's also another layer of meaning in this fantastic scene: we live, we die, we will be buried and the religion says we will live again - but then there are people who throw all the bones and skulls together in a hodgepodge...not very respectfully, I would say.   Wars, popular revolts, famines, earthquakes, volcano eruptions and cholera epidemics in the past have reduced the burial places in the city (generally in the basement of churches), so Neapolitans have solved the problem by starting to deposit their dead in this huge underground.
  But don't think they're abandoned or not respected, on the contrary! .... for Neapolitans it has become a real institution: as they are strongly superstitious they have adopted these remains and their souls, each of them choosing his own and also giving a name to him, asking in return for his protection and advice (even the winning numbers of the lottery,,,)
  This site has now become, as well as a place of worship, a curiosity for tourists who can access it with a guide who accompanies them for a respectful visit.
  For me this was a very suggestive experience.

  ...I didn't knew that. So a lot of this all got a new dimension of meaning...I saw old cemeteries in Peru on which greedy and stupid people robbed the graves of the old indian cultures and had their "fun" with bones and skulls, extremely respectless and destroying everything without any respect for the religious feelings of the indian people. So I was wrong with that Neapolitan side, sorry - I should have known, that Italian people has another sense for religion. But on the other hand: your photograph remains as a strong reminder of death, which surrounds our lifes...Buonanotte, cara Luna!
