Thank you both for the kind comments. Actually saw two black bears and many deer while driving the Shenandoah. The first bear we saw after coming around a curve. He was slowly taking his time crossing the road and then angled into the forest in no great haste. I was too slow and surprised to see him to get a good shot. Plus with the poor lighting there wasn't enough time to adjust the shutter and snap a pic. After that I focused my attentions to just inside the tree line to pick out more wildlife and to have the camera ready. Saw another bear about 10 minutes after the first and several deer.

Hope the lady didn't take the ranger too literally. There are plenty of bears and they seem to know they're protected. Bear attacks don't happen to often, but if threatened it would be bad news for a hiker.

Again thank y'all for your comments,
    Marc

    hi marc
welcome to fotocommunity. I was at Shenandoah a couple of years ago. I overheard a woman say to a ranger that she was leaving the park to go up north because she had been there a day and hadnt seen a bear yet.
The ranger told the lady to take off all her clothes and drench herself in honey. Then the bears will come out.
Well that day I took a hike down the mountain and met up with a bear with my pants down.
    VERY SCARY

take care and have fun here
