Along the Old Main - No.16 - Out of the Forest, Into the Sun

The historic Old Main Line, built by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (now part of CSX) between Relay
and Point of Rocks, Maryland, is a single-track line through the Patapsco Valley, with a number of passing
sidings to allow trains to operate in both directions.

At Gun Road, on this late afternoon in May, a westbound freight powered by a pair of
GE AC44CW diesel-electric locomotives, emerges from the forest along the Patapsco River.

Behind the photographer, a short distance down the track, is one of those passing sidings,
where an eastbound train awaits its turn to take the main, just as soon as this train clears.
