Along the Potomac No.2 - The Railroad Bridges at Harpers Ferry
The late afternoon sun of this early July day creates a tranquil mood as it contra-lights the
trees and ground vegetation along the Potomac River at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
Here, two railroad lines of the CSX converge (*) to cross the Potomac into Maryland. The truss bridge carries the Winchester (Virginia) branch, a freight-only operation, while the span at top of photo carries the high-speed mainline in the direction of Cumberland, Maryland and points west. That line serves high-speed freight traffic as well as passenger trains of Amtrak (the Washington-to-Chicago Capitol Limited) and the MARC commuter trains of the Brunswick Line.
