Below the Tracks - Marcy Avenue

Marcy Avenue, in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn is the first stop made by Queens-bound J, Z, and M trains of the New York City Subway system after crossing the Williamsburg Bridge (*) over the East River. From this point, they will operate on elevated structures, like the one seen here, for most of their routes in Brooklyn and on into Queens.

Conversely, Marcy Avenue is the last stop in Brooklyn for Manhattan-bound passengers on the J and Z trains. The Manhattan-bound M trains will actually continue on to a different part of Queens (Forest Hills-71st Avenue) after transiting, as the Sixth Avenue Local, uptown through Midtown Manhattan. Thus, its route can be visualized as a U lying on its side with the short part running up Manhattan mainly under Sixth Avenue. The passengers in this scene, shot last June, are Manhattan-bound. The Manhattan-bound J and Z trains terminate downtown at Broad Street, offering connections to several other Manhattan services along their route.
