i think you are overestimating the effect that a higher contrast would achieve.I edit every photo in photoshop to touch it up, and sometimes, a soft, natural approach is needed intead of the far too common high contrast "dramatic" pictures.
Often you will find that upping the contrast takes away from impact of a picture with a story or meaning by overpowering with too strong a prescence involving the commonly used 'low brightness and high contrast' tecnique...
while this works for minimalist pieces, it would be out of place here.

more contrast would unfortunately lose the definiton of the pram and take the effect away.the contrast is at its best.

some contrast could raise the dramatic art ...
