Candi Bentar to the outer courtyard

At the Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu area.

The outer courtyard of a temple in Bali is usually limited and made accessible by such a split gate, the Candi Bentar.
It looks as if a stupa had been cut in half and the two halves moved slightly apart.
This creates a narrow gap through which the temple can be entered. Candi Bentar is Indonesian and means "gate to the light".

There is a legend about this type of gate. In mythical times, when Mount Mahameru, the seat of all Hindu gods, was transported to Bali, it split into two parts. From these, the mountains Gunung Agung and Gunung Batur were formed. The Candi Bentar symbolizes the two halves of Mount Mahameru.
