DC Streetcar at Union Station

While Washington, D.C. once had an extensive streetcar system,
by the early 1960's, the network had given way entirely to buses.

The MetroRail rapid transit system was begun in the 1970's and provides service on several
lines between points in D.C. and the Washington suburbs of Virginia and Maryland.

But the streetcar did make a modest return in 2016 in a line along the revitalized
H St NE Benning Road corridor, at present linking Union Station with Oklahoma Avenue.

It uses three-part articulated streetcars of Czech design, built in the Czech Republic and in the U.S.

One of the cars is shown here on a recent evening at its Union Station end point on the high bridge
which carries H St over the railroad tracks leading into Union Station as well as the MetroRail Red Line.

From here, passengers can follow a passage leading to the large railway station, which also
includes a bus terminal, shops and restaurants, and the Union Station stop for Metro's Red Line.
