Desert and Steppe in Elsen Tasarhai
Together this gives a unique combination of Mongolian mountains, forests and Gobi landscape in one place. This area is 80 km east of Kharakhorum, the ancient Mongolian capital. The area is populated by maral deer (elk), wolves, roe deer and fox. The Elsen Tasarhai literally means "an isolated piece of torn-off sand" and it is a small succession of real desert amidst green steppes. It feels like the Gobi desert and visitors can hike in the sand dunes.
