A real marvel, the oldest cafe in the world situated in Piazza San Marco and established in 1720 is the oldest cafe in continuous operation since then. It took its name from its first owner, Floriano Franzesconi and the present owners claim that there isn't a single notable personality that hasn't sat in their premises including, Carlo Goldoni, Goethe, Casanova,Lord Byron,Marcel Proust, Charles Dickens etc, etc, including notable Jacobins at the time of French Revolution. Many kings and princes also had meals there during the Venetian Revolution of 1848 and the Venetian patriots turned it to a temporary hospital that housed wounded soldiers. It has numerous distinguished salas as the "Sala di Senato","Sala Greca", "Sala Orientale", "Sala Cinese". The "Sala Degli Uomini Illustri" had the pleasure to accomodate distinguished political personalities. During summer an orchestra is performing in front of the facade in Piazza di San Marco. In more recent and humble times, gran Luchino Visconti, sipping his espresso in one of the tables, and not in one in the "Grand Hotel Des Bains" of Lido, composed the plan of his masterpiece "Death in Venice".
