He is
almost as big as an eagle owl, but only half as heavy... the Great grey owl ( Strix nebulosa )
which takes its name from the black throat patch (which looks like a beard) below its beak.

Size : 62 – 69 cm
Wingspan : 140 – 150 cm
Weight : male 900 g female 1200 g

Nutrition:
smaller mammals (rats, voles, shrews, squirrels; occasionally birds and frogs)
It requires dense mixed or coniferous forests with adjacent open areas (such as clearcuts, bogs, or glades) for prey hunting

Enemies: Eagle Owl, Goshawk, Ccrows, Common raven, Humans
Habitat: Scandinavia, northeastern Europe in northern Russia and North America

Life expectancy: 15 years in the wild and up to 27 years in captivity

Great grey owl are predominantly sedentary hunters.
However, one can also observe that they are on the move as search flight hunters.
It can locate its prey both visually at 200 m and acoustically while it is still under a blanket of snow.

fast so groß wie ein Uhu dabei aber nur halb so schwer... der Bartkauz ( Strix nebulosa )
der seinen Namen von dem schwarzen Kehlfleck (der so aussieht wie ein Bart) unterhalb seines Schnabels bekommen hat.

Nahrung:
kleine Säugetiere (Ratten,Wühlmäuse,Spitzmäuse,Eichhörnchen;gelegentlich Vögel u Frösche
Er benötigt dichte Misch- oder Nadelwälder mit angrenzenden offenen Flächen (wie Kahlschläge, Moore oder Lichtungen) für die Beutejagd.

Feinde: Uhu, Habicht, Krähen, Kolkrabe, Mensch
Lebensraum: Lebensraum: Skandinavien, Nordosteuropa in Nord Russlands und Nordamerikas

Lebenserwartung: 15 Jahre in freier Wildbahn und bis zu 27 Jahre in Gefangenschaft

Bartkauze sind überwiegend Ansitzjäger.
Man kann aber auch beobachten, dass sie als Suchflugjäger unterwegs sind.
Er kann seine Beute sowohl visuell auf 200 m als auch akustisch orten, während sie sich noch unter einer Schneedecke befindet
