In Flanders fields (3)

The First World War (also known as 'the Great War') was the first international war on a global scale.
Millions of soldiers and civilians died in this terrible conflict that lasted from 1914 to 1918.
In Belgium, extremely heavy battles took place in Flanders fields, situated at the western front of the war.

Throughout the period 2014-2018 many commemorative ceremonies will take place over here in memory of those who fought and died for regaining freedom of our land.

I made a visit to Tyne Cot Cemetery and was very impressed.

***************************************************

Tyne Cot Cemetery is the largest British war cemetery in the world and is located in Passendale (Belgium) on the battlefields where in 1917 one of the bloodiest battles of WWI took place.

My shot shows the ‘Memorial of the Missing’ and a small part of the giant wall at the back of the cemetery with the names engraved of 34.927 soldiers who have no known grave (a continuation of the 54.896 names inscribed on the world famous Menin Gate at Ypres,Belgium which was too small to contain all the names as originally planned)

PS : On the radio news this morning :
"In a meadow at Passendale a large amount of ammunition was found by a plowing farmer yesterday (explosives and chemical munition such as mustard gas).
It involves ammunition from the First World War.
The Belgian army needs at least 4 weeks to clear up the site."

Finds like this happen several times each year in this region.

..... and after so many years still finds of ammunition !!!

Impressively presented in the best light. Great Foto !

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.
