Jerusalem Artichoke

The Jerusalem Artichoke (also called topinambur) is a species of sunflower native to the eastern USA.

Despite its name, the Jerusalem Artichoke has no relation to Jerusalem and it is even not a type of artichoke !

The origin of the name is a bit uncertain. Italian settlers in the USA called the plant “girasole”, the Italian word for sunflower because of its resemblence to the garden sunflower. Over time the name “girasole” may have been changed to Jerusalem.

The artichoke part of the name comes from the taste of its edible tuber which is very similar to a real artichoke.

Dutch name : Jeruzalemartisjok (ook Aardpeer genoemd)
German name : Jerusalem-Artischocke (auch Topinambur und Erdbirne genannt)
Latin name : Helianthus tuberosus
