Last Commuter of the Day
A MARC MP-36 diesel-electric locomotive rounds the curve leading into St Denis station with the
last Camden Line commuter train of the day, on its way to Camden Station in downtown Baltimore.
The MARC system actually operates two services between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore,
the other being the Penn Line, which serves Baltimore's major Pennsylvania Station in midtown.
The Penn Line is faster, operating on Amtrak's high speed Northeast Corridor
with long trains of bi-level cars, often with two locomotives on the point.
But the Camden Line, operating on the former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad mainline, now CSX, offers some
rather more interesting views, including this sweeping curve in a forested setting. A few minutes earlier,
this train crossed the famous high stone arch Thomas Viaduct at Relay, which is where the B&O's two lines
diverge, with the mainline heading to Washington and the single track Old Main Line (*) following the craggy
Patapsco Valley to Point of Rocks.
