I was pleased to be taken there, en route to maastricht, by a German friend and fellow FC member - Berthold Klammer.

I was in the military service and we had a trip to Fort Eben-Emael. We stopped by at Margraten. So we had two totally different, but impressive events that day.

Eben -emmanuel - famous from 1940.
As you will know - we British are overly interested (or even obsessed) - by the two world wars - particularly World War 1 , ("the Great War"). I myself am particularly interested in the enormous commemorative landscape features that were created by the Imperial War Graves commission, and others - after 1918 - places like Thiepval in the Somme ; the menin gate,; the newfoundland memorial at Beaumont Hamel ; Tyne Cot cemetery - mainly to the design of Edward Lutyens.
I might put up some pictures of these later in the year.
       Best wishes - mark.
P.S. No military service for me - conscription ended in the UK in 1963.

I am also interested in history of both World Wars, especially in operations and battles. After WW II my aunt came to England (Sheerness) as a nurse. When she died a few years ago, I met one of her old friends after the funeral. He was involved in "Operation Fortitude". I heard some amazingly authentic stories!
Btw: I retired after 31 years servicing in the Air Force :-)

Thankyou. I have taken more pictures of World War 1 cemeteries in France. (But no pictures on fc).
This was the first World war II cemetery that i had visited.
I have learned that you have to try and photograph people at there places ; (pointing, walking around, whatever). For example - a picture of these crosses here , at this same place, but without the figure who is contemplating them - loses a lot of its emotional content.
      There you are.
      mark.
