Cyklades
Island of Siros
Siros is not the biggest but it is the capital of Cyklades. It has always been a thriving island of rich merchants extending their trading in all Mediterranean and through all periods of their long history course. During Independance War(1821-1828) they contributed with money and ships. The most outstanding feature in the island are the reach mansion houses of the sea merchants situated exactly on the sea bord and forming the famous quarter Vaporia(presented in previous photos in the gallery). These houses can hardly be supported and maintained by their descendands that they inherited them!..
The island flourished also during the Venetian occupation(1200-1500) and the interior is marked by this period.
The photo is from Chora, the capital, with beautiful tiny medieval streets.

"for whom the bell tolls…" – my first thought! what a theatrical mood – both light-wise and perspective-wise! everything seems to be so narrow, so dramatically lit, so strikingly labyrinthian in a vertical way, so rising UP, UP, UP into the sky! beautifully captured, as always, alexander! i do love the layered looks of the bell tower!!! greetings, sabine. p.s.: always enjoy reading your thoughts on the history and significance of the sites and moods you capture!Johanna C. 15/04/2015 19:34

Your chosen format has enhanced the narrowness of these old streets. The tones and details are excellent. It is such a shame that these places cannot easily be kept in good order. Letting them go to ruin is not how it should be... but sadly is the same the world over.
