Moses with horns

Rome
Church of San Pietro in Vincoli

The old and historic church in the heart of Rome, just five minutes walk from Colosseum, houses a magnificent sculptured composition with Moses, Michelangelo's masterpiece, in the middle considered by many as unequalled by any modern or ancient work. The statue was commissioned by Pope Julius II to decorate his tomb but he died before the work was completed. Moses hairs, so difficult to render in sculpture are so soft and downy that it seems as if the iron chisel must have become a brush. Another strange thing are the two horns on Moses head, a subject open to many interpretations by historians and scolars and remaning still in dark till today.
A visit to this church is really a must. Don't worry of crowds, the place is usually empty...

WOW again! if it weren't for the outdated beard (far from being lumbersexual, i'm afraid) and the horns, one could mistake him for a contemporary athlete! what a great achievement, what great artistic skills to make them look so naturally human!! now that i've seen his arms, i'm tempted to believe that he did in fact manage to part the red sea and carry those heavy tablets of stone down from mount sinai! as for the horns… to be a god of nature might have come in handy in terms of parting the red sea and making it "walkable"… ; ))) greetings, sabine.

Michelangelo was a master of his art, bith at creating the most magnificent statues and great paintings. A man with great foresight.
This is a magnificent statue very well taken.
I have seen the Madonna and Child at Notre-Dame in Bruges., a wonderful pice of culpture... as you stand an look you could truly believe that both Mother and Cildd are breathing.
