One for Columbus Day...
Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas on October 12, 1492.
His discovery of "The New World" is marked by Columbus Day in the United States...
Similar days honoring the Italian explorer, sailing under the flag of Spain, are
marked, by various other names, in South America, the Caribbean, Spain, and Italy.
Sadly, the fountain part of this imposing sculpture is only a memory, but a fond one, from my childhood...arriving in Washington by train with my Mom or Dad, navigating the cavernous concourse and main waiting room of Union Station, walking out into the sunlight, across that broad plaza, and seeing those dancing waters framing the nearby US Capitol. One imagines Columbus staring imploringly in the direction of that building; but, to date, those dancing waters remain...
a distant memory.
