Many churches in the Aegean islands dedicated to Virgin are built on the coast, by the sea. In such a case locals and especially old captains refer to her as "Panaghia the Mermaid" (Panaghia=Virgin Mary).

    Even with the black and white you imagine the contrast between the deep blue sea and the whiteness of the churches and homes.

    Such Churches, white and in sunlight must seem like very wlcoming bacons to the fishermen.
    Well exposed for the details in those white walls and the darker sea.
