Pastoral Contentment, Avers-Juf

It was an alpine-clear autumn afternoon, and my friends Beatrice and Ruedi
were introducing me to Avers-Juf region of Switzerland’s Canton Graubünden.

Our destination was the village of Juf which, at an elevation of 2,126 meters/6,975 feet, is the highest permanently inhabited settlement in Europe. It is high above the tree-line, with only scrubby ground vegetation, and very rustic with its rough-hewn stone and wood buildings with their distinctive Walser-type roof shingles.(*)

As we were descending the steep road from Juf on our way to exploring other parts of this rugged Graubünden landscape, we passed this very steep pasture with lots of grazing cattle. But what caught my eye – and occasioned this stop – was the lone little donkey amidst the herd of cattle.

He proved not only friendly but quite photogenic!
