Peeps

This photograph (8270) of Charlie was shot on Tiger Mtn on 19 October 2006.

What you see is the result of holding a peephole (like for a door) in front of the lens and shooting through that. This is one exposure. The white balance was set differently (Charlie's camera, my shot) so I left it that way. This photograph is exactly as it came from the camera.

As always, I'm eager for your questions, comments, and criticisms.

Also, if anyone duplicates this experiment, please let me know so I can view your results.

Rob - Thank you. I left the white balance as is because I felt that it complimented the rough focus pretty well. Gives it that sort of spy feel. Mostly a successful experiment in the respect that I see what can be done. I'll work to perfect the final image over time.

Tom - Thanks. I will be shooting more like this once I am able to get a dSLR. The lens on my SD550 is too small to get a useful effect from the peephole. The lighting was limited (indoors and at night) and as I stated the white balance was set at something unusual and I didn't bother to change it (neither before the shot nor in RAW processing). I am moslty interested in the geometry, framing, and juxtaposition of this shot.

A novel idea but looks like you'll have to practice. It'll be hard to get everything in focus but through trial and error you'll prevail I'm sure. White balance needs addressing too. Try the technique outdoors with a tripod and with a good landscape.
