Pennsylvania | ironmaster´s mansion |
More than a hundred years ago this idyllic place has been cut bare, noise and soot of the furnace filled the air. People were working hard to produce iron from the ore, which came from the mountains around.
Today you can get an impression of the hard work. Each furnace and the workers were provided with supplies by a village in the vicinity, a kind of a self sufficient industry.
Hopewell furnace was founded in 1771 and had its most prosperous time from 1820 to 1840. In 1883 the site went out of operation due to changes in iron making.
