Rail and road bridges at Murray Bridge, South Australia
Originally Thompson's Crossing, later Edward's Crossing, and now Murray Bridge. The first ferry to cross the river was operated miles downstream at Wellington from 1840. In 1879, a bridge was built here (visible in the background) and the location became known as Murray Bridge. After 1886, the interstate railway also used the bridge until 1927 when a separate rail bridge was opened. Murray Bridge was an important terminal for steamers and barges shipping grain, wool and passengers up and down the river.
The present day Rural City of Murray Bridge is an important regional commercial and service centre, with a population of about 18,000. It is an hour's drive from the capital, Adelaide.
