  In my mind - I was aware of some famous paintings of rowers by an American artist - Thomas Eakins. e.g. "Max Schmitt in a single scull".
  In the mid-19th century - rowing races were massively popular sports on the River Tyne (and the Thames, and in America). The sport lost nearly all of its popularity - but in the past 20 years - rowing has become a more popular sport with young men and women , on the River Tyne. Mark.
