thanks alot! I took this shot spontaneously and havent really payed much mind to the black strip in the background. But after contemplating your comment, I can see how it could be distracting, but having said that, I feel that having one flat background can be a little too "fixed" looking, like the photo was set up in a studio or something, you know? I like the sharpness and overall composition. Only comment for improvement is moving a little to the side to remove the distracting (to me) dark spot coming out of the bird's head.
