According to tradition, right on top of the steeple rock and in a cavern a shepherd found the icon of Virgin Mary and since then she is is considered as the Holy saviour of the eternaly threatened by the volcano and pirates island.A monastery to house the icon was built on the same place surrounded by remnants of the very ancient wall (4th century BC) and and also of another more recent medieval wall built by the Johannites knights, beginning of 14th century. One can mount to the monastery from over 400 steps but the view over the Aegean expansion is glorious from there.

"Artistic" architecture. Nicely presented with an interesting angle of view and overall composition that givees the photo fine depth.

an impressive view from below of the monastery on its high perch .... and the view to the distance beautiful - so much history here, always fascinating to read !!!
