Shard-ward - a Southwark Nightscape
The distinctive soaring form of The Shard rises like a beacon in the Southwark night sky,
as seen from one of the platforms at London’s Waterloo East station late on a November night.
The Southeastern Railway trains calling at Waterloo East connect Charing Cross station,
on the north bank of the Thames with London Bridge Station, close by The Shard.
Busy though it is, Waterloo East is not one of London’s really huge railway termini, but it
nonetheless serves as an effective nexus for mainline rail, as well as London’s extensive
Underground system. It connects to the main Waterloo Station by an elevated walkway
across Waterloo Road, and, from the east end of its platforms, provides access to the
Southwark Tube Station on the modern Jubilee Line Extension of the Underground.
