Shining rust red,

thick, dense coat... and bright eyes in a black face...

The Red Vari
(Varecia rubra)

reaches a body length of up to 60 - 65 cm,
a tail length of 60 cm
and a weight of 3,000 - 4,800 g.

These varis are crepuscular and nocturnal.
They have a purely vegetarian diet of leaves, seeds, fruit and nectar.
Red Varis are found exclusively on the Masoala Peninsula in the north-east of Madagascar.
Their habitat is primary rainforests, where they can be found up to 1000 meters above sea level.
Their natural predators include only the fossa, a Madegassian sneak cat.
In the wild they can reach an age of 15 to 20 years, in captivity up to 28 years.

Due to the massive encroachment on nature, in particular the deforestation of the rainforests, the Red Vari is threatened with extinction.
The heavy hunting of meat to feed the population and of skins for export is clearly contributing to this critical situation. With the establishment of the Masoala National Park in 1997, at least part of its range has been protected.

Der Rote Vari

erreicht eine Körperlänge von bis zu 60 - 65 cm,
eine Schwanzlänge von 60 cm
sowie ein Gewicht von 3.000 - 4.800 g

Diese Varis sind dämmerungs- und nachtaktiv.
Sie ernähren sich rein vegetarisch von Blättern, Samen, Früchten und Nektar.
Rote Varis kommen ausschließlich auf der Masoala-Halbinsel im nordöstlichen Madagaskar vor.
Ihr Lebensraum sind primäre Regenwälder, wo sie bis zu 1000 Meter Seehöhe vorkommen.
Zu ihren natürlichen Feinden gehört nur die Fossa, eine madegassische Schleichkatze.
In Freiheit können sie ein Alter von 15 bis 20 Jahren erreichen, in Gefangenschaft auch bis 28 Jahre.

Aufgrund der massiven Eingriffe in die Natur, insbesondere der Abholzung der Regenwälder, steht der Rote Vari kurz vor der Ausrottung.
Die starke Bejagung wegen ihres Fleisches für die Ernährung der Bevölkerung und der Felle für den Export tragen zur kritischen Situation deutlich bei. Mit der Errichtung des Masoala-Nationalparks 1997 ist zumindest ein Teil ihres Verbreitungsgebietes geschützt worden.
