São Paulo Ballad 4

The sights may be strange, and they're never the same
But it is flesh of our flesh, and brain of our brain,
And city-streets bearing an Indian name
Look a lot like the brand on the forehead of Cain.
We carried our flags to a barren land.
With no room for the people who lived there before
Those who wouldn't be cultured, had to die from our hand
Then we brought in the black man, to straighten the score.

So we built our new Europe at the Capricorn’s ring
established new versions of our old style of life
We brought all the blessings Old Europe can bring
-For those who could bend far enough to survive...
Now I drink German beer at an old English Pub.
With people of all colors this planet has bred,
Four hundred years history all conjured up
One quarter happy, and three quarters bad.
