Spirit Frightener
Once swahili wall niches were used for displaying the household valuable: not to show them off but to attract the evil spirits into the household walls thus freeing the house of their presence.
Nowadays unfortunately the household valuables have shrunk in size and importance...maybe so too have the evil spirits!
