St Achillios ruins...

In North West Macedonia and near the borders with FYROM extends the area of Prespes lakes.This part of Greece is quite picturesque but very poor with heavy winters and very difficult conditions of cultivating the land by the locals who live in villages scattered in the area.Latelly the region is turistically promoted and the income of the locals improved.

In a little beautiful island in one of the Prespes lakes, are the ruins of St Achilius, an Orthodox basilica church built im 960 AC but destroyed during the wars between Byzantines and Bulgarians.
The photo was taken last February during a lovely sunny winter day...

    stunning light, yes! once again it creates strikingly harsh, almost "acoustic" contrasts which make the power and sacredness of the place strongly felt! despite being in ruins, st. achillios and its semicircular apse still retain an awe-inspiring aura of glory and sacrosanctity! and are those snow-capped mountains in the back? wow, quite impressive indeed! greetings, sabine. p.s.: i like, how the sky looks all soft – blanket-like –, as though trying to ease the ruins pain… ; ))

    There is something very special about old sacred ruins, they hold a special atmosphere for any who take the time to stand and look and take it all in. This is a superb shot Alexander, the light and shade picks out all the shapes and details of this ancient place so well.
