Esti, your documentation of the seriousness of choosing the items is fantastic. It's a thanksgiving that non-Jews rarely have knowledge of. I had an Orthodox friend who's father was a Rabbi, so I have contact knowledge. I'm really enjoying this series of yours.

This palm breach is one of the four kinds of plants which one has to bring to the sucot-hut. (the others are myrtle, willow and etrog-citron). It should be undamaged. That is why he checks it so thoroughly.
