What really counts at the end of the Day: Very impressive picture Quality and an unique stellar fixed Zoom lens without any problems with Dust on Sensor.
- excellent build quality.
- Loooong lasting battery.
- Absolutly silent if You wish so.
- no visible vignetting,
- sharp also wide open in the corners,
- flare very well controlled.
- some barrel distortion at 24 ~ 35 mm is normal and can easily be fixed with PTLens (or similar tools).
- Amazing colours, not the formerly oversaturated "Sony style"
- low noise up to 400 ASA,
- good dynamic range.
- In RAW mode additional 1 stop in the highlights and up to 2 stops in the shadows dynamic range. very useful in contrasty or night scenes.
you can use the RAW-plugin of PhotoShop CS2 (Version 3.3 at least) - easy to use, well integrated in the PS- workflow an amazing results. Don't install the included Software!
- Easy to use timed exposure up to 3 minutes, the camera counts the seconds!
Sony listened to the 7x7 and 8x8 users and improved some features, for example
- timed exposure,
- 2nd parameter Dial,
- quick switch from playback to record mode,
- focus push button in manual focussing,
- exact flash exposure correction,
- complete technical informations in the EVF/LCD, no more divided into different Screens
- Grid lines for picture composing and architectural shots in the viewfinder,
- overexposure warning via "Zebra mode", similar to "blinking highlights" from other brands
- histogramm for all RGB channels.
- very useful zoom range if you like archtectural, street, landscape, people fotographs
- the AF is not so bad as some internet hype states
- improved LCD/EVF
- information board about important fotographic paramaters like exposure time, f-Stop, ISO, etc. under (and therefore outside) the preview pic in EVF/LCD
This means also: If You are familiar with the 7x7 or 8x8 Sony cameras, you can use also the R1.
The only camera with live histogramm and overexposure warning with APS sized sensor!
A really impressive all in one tool.
Problems
- You will need a few days learning to use the camera if you are newbie or come from another brand.
- Autofocus slow compared to DSLR.
- Exposure bracketing limited to 1/8 scond or shorter.
- No infrared remote control.
- lousy software.
- noisy compared to DSLR at 800 ..3200 ASA.
- Pretty useless AGCS (automatic contrast correction) .
- the bullproof laser autofocus of the 7x7 and 8x8 is lost
- not a pocket or action camera.
- buttons and dials are small, not easy to use with gloves
- the LCD catches fingeprints, a transparent display protection is a must have!
