The fishermen return
Oil and acrylic on canvas. I was inspired by the boats on the foreshore of Hastings old town. The lagest land based fishing fleet in europe (No Harbour) Those who tow the boats ashore are paid with fish which they are allowed to sell after 10am on the beach. The term 'shirkers' comes from ship workers and after the war years those with no jobs used to push the boats out in return for fish. (A uboat was beached here in 1923) - it caused a bit of interest amongst the local community. I visited the memorial the Germans built at Laboe for "All those still on patrol!" The u boat film Das Boot hatte doch viele englander auch gesehen. There is a poem about "Those who go down to the Sea in boats----" I shall have to read it again.
