The Times They Are a-Changin’In 1982, I had one of the most significant experiences of my life on the terrace of Fretheim Hotel.
Back then, Flåm was a pretty quiet place, still spared from the cruise ships.
We were 5 young men from Germany who were chatting lively about the next upcoming days of our vacation, when we heard from the street the loud shouting and screaming of a woman of about fifty. We didn't understand her Norwegian, but since we were the only guests outside, we first thought that we had simply become too loud.
But the woman didn't calm down at all and ended up sobbing in despair.
Other passers-by who had become aware of the situation tried to calm her down and gently pulled her away.
We were at a loss and turned to the waitress in English.
She explained to us, as a child the woman had come to Flam at the end of the war.She was the only survivor of a small settlement in Norwegian Finnmark.
Her whole family had been murdered by German troops when they retreated from Finnmark in 1944.
Almost fourty years later, the woman couldn't stand our loud German conversation.
I will never forget this woman
