The Goreme plain in central Cappadocia
The Goreme is a historical vast plain in Cappadocia where the Korama town (25000) is located hardly menaging an empty space among the "fairy chimney" rock formations of which this site is world famous. The time that the Goreme valley was first settled is unclear, it is estimated as back as 1800 BC, by natives seeking refuge between the rivalring empires of Greek and Persians and digging caves in the rocks. Later it was inhabitet by Christians fleeing from Rome and during the time of Byzantine Empire, when Christianity was the prevailing religion, it became a site of ritual retrieval, pray and penitence and monastic isolation. This is evident from the many churches curved in the rocks many of them loaded with frescoes and wall paintings.
